Constituency Communications & Outreach Co-ordinator

Position:  Constituency Communications & Outreach Co-ordinator

 

Purpose:  To establish meaningful relationships and convey effective messaging with the constituents of North Vancouver on behalf of the Member of Parliament.

 

General Description:  Reporting to the Member of Parliament and Constituency Director, the Communications and Outreach Manager is responsible for establishing and maintaining local communications and outreach priorities in the riding. 

 

Communications Duties:

  • Develop and maintain constituency communications strategy, including branding;
  • Develop and maintain strong relationship with Minister’s Press Secretary and Communications Director in Ottawa;
  • Attend events and meetings with MP to provide on-site support and update social media feeds (i.e. constant shadowing for MP in riding);
  • Maintain an active, responsive, timely community presence on social media, working in close cooperation with Minister’s Press Secretary in Ottawa; 
  • Build and establish relationships with local media outlets, and support media relations for the office, including drafting statements, news releases, key messages;
  • Maintain MP website, keeping it up to date with new content to highlight local initiatives and communications products (e.g. Op Eds, open letters, interviews etc.);
  • Obtain, edit and organize photo/video footage of MP while in the riding;
  • Assist Director and MP with developing content for community newspaper columns, Householders and other written communication products.
  • Assisting the Casework Manager with cases and inquiries.

 

Outreach and Scheduling Duties:

  • Work closely with Constituency Director to plan outreach initiatives and events;
  • Work closely with Constituency Scheduler to ensure all dots are connected with respect to Ministerial demands and local priorities;
  • Build and establish relationships with local stakeholders and their communities;
  • Provide regular detailed updates to MP on ongoing community issues, events, and areas of future opportunity;
  • Work closely with Constituency Director to attend local meetings and events on behalf of MP when he is unavailable;
  • Work closely with Constituency Director to meet with constituents and address concerns on behalf of MP when he is unavailable;

 

Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education in Political Science, International Affairs, Communications or other related field;
  • Experience working with the public;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail; 
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task;
  • Self-starter able to adapt to new situations;
  • Excellent English language verbal and written communications skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and use of social media platforms.

 Valued Assets:

  • Communications/social media experience;
  • Residency in North Vancouver/knowledge of the riding;
  • Understanding of Canada’s parliamentary system and operation of the Federal government;
  • Community involvement in North Vancouver; 
  • Knowledge of additional language such as Farsi or French.
