Statement on protests in Iran, January 9th 2026
January 9, 2026

I remain deeply concerned by the escalating situation in Iran and the continued repression of those who are peacefully calling for dignity, freedom, and a voice in shaping their own future. In North Vancouver–Capilano, we are home to a strong and vibrant Iranian-Canadian community, many of whom are watching these events with profound concern for their loved ones and for the future of Iran.

I commend the courage of the Iranian people who continue to stand up for their fundamental human rights and democratic freedoms. Canada strongly condemns the Iranian regime’s use of violence, arbitrary arrests, intimidation, and the wrongful imprisonment and execution of protesters. Now, at this turning point in Iranian history, let me be unequivocally  clear- Canada stands with you on the side of human rights and democracy.

Canada continues to take concrete steps to hold Iran accountable, including sanctions against 215 Iranian individuals and 256 entities for human rights abuses, support for terrorism, and threats to international peace and security. Canada also unequivocally opposes the death penalty in all circumstances. Through our leadership at the United Nations, we have reaffirmed our commitment to human rights in Iran and condemned the regime’s use of executions as a tool of repression.

My support for the Iranian people—particularly women, girls, and young people who have been so deliberately targeted—remains unwavering. We will continue to amplify their voices, reject sham trials and fabricated charges, and call on Iran to immediately halt executions, end these brutal and inhumane practices, return internet to it’s people and cease the imprisonment of protestors. Canada will continue to stand with the Iranian people and to hold Iran to account.
