You're Invited: WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: Post-Pandemic consideration for Elders in community Virtual event

 

Jonathan Wilkinson, MP for North Vancouver, is hosting an event next week for seniors in our community. It is a virtual panel discussion regarding the post-pandemic considerations for seniors in community.

We welcome anyone who is a senior, or who may care for or have an interest in seniors living independently, needing support, or living in care.

The moderated panel will be hosted by Jonathan Wilkinson, MP for North Vancouver, and will feature panel members with particular expertise in the health care and non-profit communities who work closely with seniors, a North Vancouver City councillor and senior, and the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Seniors, Stephane Lauzon.

The event will be on August 12th from 2:00pm to 3:30pm on Zoom, and the log-in will be sent closer to the date. We are also receiving pre-submitted questions in advance. If anyone interested would like to submit a question for the panel, please email [email protected] or call our office before Wednesday August 11th.

Bios

Don Bell – Councillor, City of North Vancouver

Don is serving his third term on City Council.

He has been a resident of North Vancouver for almost 50 years, and have extensive business, community, and local political experience. Owned and operated a small retail business in North Vancouver for 4 years and for 13 years was in corporate management at Canada Safeway.

Don has previously served in elected office in North Vancouver as Member of Parliament, North Vancouver District Mayor and Councillor, North Vancouver School Board Chair and Trustee, and GVRD (now Metro Vancouver) Vice-Chair and Director.

During this time, he served as Chair or member on many North Vancouver municipal committees, GVRD (now Metro Vancouver) committees, and federal government Parliamentary committees. He was appointed Chair in 2010 of the special City of North Vancouver Task Force on Civic Engagement.

He is active in non-political community activities. A former member of the Tourism Vancouver Board and the original 2010 Winter Olympics Bid Committee. He was the Honourary Chair for the BC Special Olympics, was appointed a Life Member of the BC Youth Soccer Association and the Canadian Soccer Alumni and was appointed an Honourary Director of BC Wheelchair Sports. He was honoured for my community service with the Canada 125 Medal, and with the Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Medal. In 2008 he received the Freedom of the District of North Vancouver Award for distinguished service to the community.

 

Stéphane Lauzon Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Seniors

Member of Parliament for Argenteuil—La Petite-Nation

Stéphane Lauzon was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Argenteuil—La Petite-Nation in 2015.

After working at the Canadian International Paper Company in the 1980s, Mr. Lauzon returned to school in 1992 to complete a teaching certificate. He then worked in the field of vocational training for over 20 years. Mr. Lauzon became a City of Gatineau municipal councillor in 2009. In addition to serving as councillor, he managed construction projects at a company that he started himself.

Mr. Lauzon is currently working towards a Bachelor of Business Administration at the Université du Québec en Outaouais.

He is the father of three children.

 

Jasmin Pinto – LPN Evergreen House

She is a Licensed Practical Nurse and Certified Foot Care Nurse, and currently working at Lions Gate Hospital, Evergreen House under Vancouver Coastal Health.


Having been in Health Care field for 28 years now here on the North Shore. She worked as care aide, both in Facility and Community. Jasmin went back to school to pursue nursing. Then worked in Pharmacy as a pharmacy nurse under the Pharmacare Program, delivering medication to client’s home and monitoring health status after discharged from the hospital.

Currently she is the Regional Representative of BCNU Mosaic of Colour Caucus, Coastal Mountain.

 

Susan Soloman – Hollyburn Outreach Services and member of the Gitxsan First Nation.

On a professional level, she worked hard to obtain my Social Work master’s degree In Indigenous Trauma and Resiliency and completed in November 2020. Which has led to her new position of Senior’s Supervisor at Hollyburn Outreach services. Previously, she had worked as the Indigenous Liaison leadership role as well as a social work position at the BC Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

 She takes pride in her work and views herself as a helper and humbly able to assist Senior’s and Indigenous Elder’s from all North and West Vancouver area’s. As a team she aides Seniors navigating the housing system.  Providing Seniors, clients and patients and family’s practical support and holistic wellness, through difficult times, of being homeless or looking for housing especially during these covid times. Seniors and Elder’s as well can be dealing with stress and illness which affects them and their loved ones.
